Campaign against HM the King in relation to 23-F: defence arguments on the monarch's involvement
Resumen / Summary
ES
Nota informativa (ref.

Intelligence note (ref. 9/BFG/181/813, 10 pages) on the campaign orchestrated during the 23-F trial to implicate the King in the conspiracy. Defence lawyers argued that the King knew about the Milans-Tejero Plan and used it to consolidate his position; that he had arranged to travel abroad if the coup failed; that his Basque Country visit was intended to gauge the political situation; and that Armada's communication referred to as 'el sitio personal' demonstrated the monarch's prior knowledge. The note analyses the most significant claims by the military defendants that gave rise to this campaign.

Después ARMADA viajó a Valencia y alli concretó --
MILANS DEL BOSCH y ARMADA.
hechos no salian bien.

lencia, Sevilla, Valladolid y Zaragoza»
nizada a nivel inferior a Coronel.

pio trono. A ae

Armada
comete el primer error. Diplomaticaments intenta convencer a Gabei-
Policia Nacional inmediatemente» Mientras Armada sale a reunirse

SUBJECT.- Campaign against H.M. the King in relation to 23-F
The alleged involvement of H.M. the King in the events
events that took place on February 23, 1981 responds, for
one part, to the desire to reduce the criminal responsibility of -
the prosecution for those events and, on the other, the possibility
to have an argument against the Crown that makes it possible -
a similar attempt in the future.
Both on the part of the lawyers defending the true
involved, such as among political groups and circles
sympathizers with their cause, there has been extensive
mind this alleged involvement of H.M. the King as reason DELS
maria of the attempted coup d'état. For this they have been distorted
some real facts have been interpreted in a malicious way.
others have been tempted and events have been invented that have only
existed in the minds of its creators.
All of this has given rise to the fact that from the interested sectors
two successive rumors have been launched against the Crown that,
It is necessary to admit it, they had some success in the sectors
of the radical right. Regarding the FAS, an attempt has been made to imbue
insistently the idea that intervention was not possible
of two Generals like MILANS and ARMADA without prior knowledge of
Your Majesty.
The attempt has therefore been made to demonstrate that the King had knowledge
prior foundation on: the events that were going to occur and for
The following arguments have been considered, among others:
- The King reached an agreement with ARMADA in BAQUEIRA during
the Christmas holidays. They finalized the details of the cai
day of the President: Suarez -and the General informed His Majesty
from the point of view of the PSOE, which he knew after the meal
Lérida. Afterwards ARMADA traveled to Valencia and there agreed --
"the way to do it" with General MILANS DEL BOSCH.
- The King, together with some Generals, forced the resignation of
Suarez and prepared the coup in connivance with the Generals
MILANS DEL BOSCH and ARMADA. By not receiving approval
expected from GISCARD and HELMUNT SMITD betrayed
his Generals to save his throne. The fact that Tejero
not accepting the plane that was offered complicated the situation.
Sie epi
tion.
Along the same lines as the previous one, it has also been said that
It was Don Juan de Borbón who convinced his son to give
go backwards.
The King somehow knew about the MILANS and TEJERO Plan and
He tried to use it to consolidate his figure. For this
employed ARMADA whom he then disavowed (perhaps pre-
saw agreement) and he was left before the political parties as
"the savior of the Constitution and democracy",
The King's visit to the Basque Country, where it was certain that -
were going to produce incidents - others say that they were pre
unemployed - was intended to highlight the chaotic nature of
the situation and therefore justify the imminent coup
of state.-The serene words of H.M. in the House of Jun-
Giúernica would not have been possible if they had not been brought
I was previously prepared because I knew what was going to happen.
The proof that the King knew the events that were going to occur
It is said that he sent his children to England (?).
When the King found out that Congress had been attacked
do, the first thing he asked was if he had moved the Division
Armored, which means that: it was waiting for the intervention of
this Unit.
The King had a plane prepared to leave Spain if the
facts did not go well.
The phrase from his telegram to General Milans of Bosch "no longer
I can go back", has been interpreted as proof
of retreat of the King and the abandonment of his Generals.
The message to ARMADA that it
what he would do would be -''in his personal capacity".
Subsequently it has also been claimed that the delay in
the oral hearing of the process, and even its possible non-celebration,
has been due to pressure from H.M. the King, who does not care
that the facts be clarified.
Photocopies of some of the most important pamphlets are attached.
