CESID internal note: rumours about secret King meetings with military officers involved in the 23-F

CESID internal note (N/Ref: 241/05-02-82, Microfilm 04092/S, Classification D/2, Confidential Source) on rumours in Cantabrian and Madrid military circles about confidential meetings between HM the King and military officers involved in the February 1981 coup. It is claimed that someone important from the Royal Household met with General Armada. Lieutenant General Milans del Bosch reportedly demanded the meeting be with the King personally, without intermediaries. Circles assert the King met confidentially with Milans del Bosch, and that the aim is to ensure the Crown emerges unharmed from the trial. CESID raises these reports because informants are not gossips — some are military sector members — and they assert the facts as true.

"Specifically, it is asserted that someone very important from the Royal Household met with General Armada, providing guidance on his conduct at the oral hearing; that when a similar meeting was sought with General Milans del Bosch, he demanded the meeting be with the King personally, without intermediaries or lower-level advisers; and in these circles of opinion it is ASSERTED that the King did indeed meet confidentially with Lt Gen Milans del Bosch; it is noted that above all else the aim is to ensure the Crown emerges unharmed from the proceedings."
